All precious gemstones are formed inside grounds surrounded by rocks except the Pearl, it is the only gemstone formed inside a living creature, an oyster, mussel or clam.
Pearls form when an irritant, usually a parasite or grain of sand, works its way into an oyster which defends itself by coating the irritant with a fluid. Layer upon layer of this coating, called 'nacre', is deposited until a lustrous pearl is formed!
